HeartMath is an intelligent stress management programme.

Below is an extract from HeartMath SA’s website:

HeartMath® is a scientifically validated system of techniques and technologies that will help you to transform your stress, build your resilience and boost your performance.

HeartMath is easy to learn and the simple but powerful techniques can be used “in the moment”.

Self-regulation is the ability to monitor and control our own behavior, emotions, or thoughts, altering them in accordance with the demands of the situation.

HeartMath South Africa is dedicated to improving health, performance and well-being at home and in the workplace. Our mission is to uplift and transform the hearts and lives of South Africans through learning simple emotional self-regulation techniques which ultimately build and sustain resilience. We provide products, training and consulting services that build happy and resilient individuals, teams and organisations.’

At Cedar Crest Nursery School, all of our teachers receive HeartMath coaching, as part of their Induction training. The teachers are then able to practice the techniques in their classrooms daily.  When we first introduced the HeartMath techniques into the school, we noticed an 80% reduction in temper tantrums; within a space of two weeks. This was as a direct result of doing work with the teachers, who started practicing the techniques, we had not yet introduced the children to Early HeartSmarts. The techniques are easy to learn and the results are quick.

Our school principal is a licenced HeartMath coach and we therefore offer coaching to parents and any other interested individuals who are looking to transform their stress, build resilience and improve overall performance.

Early HeartSmarts by HeartMath

Early HeartSmarts is a fun and interactive programme developed by the Institute of HeartMath

We are living in a very fast paced and diverse world and this creates a fair measure of stress. We know that our children feed off our emotions, they sense our stress and they also experience stress and anxiety at a very young age.

Scientific research reveals a significant link between the heart and our cognitive, emotional and physical lives.

Communication from the heart to the brain dramatically influences our emotional state, our thought processes and therefore our responses to situations. This is key and why we feel it is important to develop HeartSmart children.

The Early HeartSmarts programme teaches children key social and emotional competencies. The children will learn how to regulate their emotions using simple methodologies in a fun, interactive and exciting way.

Objectives of the programme:

  • To recognize and better understand basic emotional states
  • To learn to regulate emotions
  • To strengthen the expression of positive feelings
  • To improve peer relations
  • To develop problem solving skills

The programme encourages children to use their feeling and thinking skills to solve problems.

They will learn more about the connection between the physical heart and the emotional part of the heart. It will assist in reducing stress and anxiety, and build their self –esteem.
